NIKKI SIXX: Entire 'Canadian Music Week' Interview Posted Online - Mar. 29, 2011

Rock legend, best-selling author, photographer and host of the syndicated radio shows "Sixx Sense" and "The Side Show Countdown" Nikki Sixx discussed his many ventures — including a new book and album, both titled "This Is Gonna Hurt" — in an exclusive interview with Jeff Woods on March 10 during Canadian Music Week at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. You can now watch the chat in its entirety below (courtesy of BackstageAxxess.com):

Excerpts from the chat:

On photography:

Nikki: "I feel honored to photograph people. I get to pull out of them something that I know they're sharing only with me. I've had people break down in tears in photos sessions and it's not because I'm yelling or throwing things. It's literally because the connection gets so close. They spill the truth and it comes out in photos.

On ghost writers for his new book:

Nikki: "I didn't want to use a ghost writer. You know, it's a lot more work than I thought. It's a lot of work to write a book. I really appreciate that in other writers now... I write in a tempo that is very much the beat generation-style writer. That's just who influenced me the most. I love the tempo of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. I just love the way it kind of rambles but in time to itself. I was just able to go off into this land of doing that and it ended up hundreds of pages more than I ever needed in a book. But I think that's important — to be super creative and then come back and find out what the real message was...I wrote the whole thing myself and I'm really proud of it. And I think fans deserve that."

On the SIXX: A.M. song "Goodbye My Friends":

Nikki: "I said, I want to write a song that's played at my funeral. And that's what the song is. It's the song that needed to be written when you get to a place in your life when you can see the end. So you realize, what do you want to say at that moment. That song is basically about how I don't have anything to apologize for."

On motorbikes:

Nikki: "I had this experience on a motorcycle about 10 years ago. I had a bike built for me and the chain locked up. It was a hard-tail. And I was doing about 50 miles per hour and it just locked up on me. And it was a moment where I realized there was this thing called pavement and I admit it kind of put a bit of a damper on me riding as much as I used to because I kind of realized I have four children and I've got a lot going on."

On skydiving:

Nikki: "Skydiving was one of the greatest highs I've ever got. I love it. I did it four times in one day because I'm an addict and then I said, I should never do this again because I'll be that guy."

On dealing with demons:

Nikki: "I know that everyday it's this thing where I'm always trying to become a better man, a better father, a better artist, trying to put a lot of positive energy out there. I'm still trying to change what the model looks like for being a rock star... I want to do something positive... just want to keep evolving and I don't know where I'm going 100%. I'm just going to keep making music, I'm just getting started as a photographer, I can see myself getting into movies."

On cell phones at concerts:

Nikki: "In concerts, a lot of times, people are just holding up their phones and you look out and you see thousands of phones and I'll notice right in the front row, people are looking at their phone. They're not even looking at the performance. And it was weird — I went to the Grammys and when Mick Jagger came out, everyone, including the celebrities and musicians, they were all looking into their phones. And I'm going, Mick Jagger is right there! I mean, I felt like stopping the show and saying, 'Guys, look at this.' It is part of what's going on and it's kind of weird for me. I understand someone wants to capture a moment, it's really beautiful that we get to do that. But from my side...sometimes we don't necessarily fire on all cylinders... (because) when we (mess) up, everyone sees it and it makes you a little bit uncomfortable. You think, Maybe I shouldn't jump from that speaker to that speaker because I don't want to be on YouTube as (idiot) of the week. And it's true, I swear to god, I talk to other musicians. You flub a note, it happens, but because there's 10 people in front of you with their iPhone... then you keep (messing) up. So it's a good thing, but then there's that part of it."

On new artists:

Nikki: "I don't know with music how to really do anything more than inspire young bands to write better songs. To maybe buy some hair products. I don't know about you, but I'm sick of looking at bands that don't scare me. They don't inspire me, they don't dress in a way that's interesting, they don't have anything to say and they're boring. And I think it's sad that that's OK. I think it's just become redundant and ridiculous. There are a couple of great bands out there but I'm not seeing any new METALLICAs, I'm not seeing any new GUNS N' ROSES, I'm not seeing any new ROLLING STONES. Where's the new Steven Tyler. I'd love to meet him. I'd love to see a band become the biggest band in the world."

SUBURBAN TRIBE Calling It Quits - Mar. 29, 2011

Finnish rock/metal act SUBURBAN TRIBE has announced plans to disband this year. The group, which formed 20 years ago (summer 1991), will hold a celebration party on July 30 at Tavastia in Helsinki as a way to thank its fans and everyone who was part of the band's story. According to SUBURBAN TRIBE, the decision to call it quits involves no drama, only that the bandmembers' "hearts say that this is where the road ends."

SUBURBAN TRIBE bassist Janne Joutsenniemi was previously a member of the legendary Finnish thrash band STONE alongside guitarist Roope Latvala, who is now in CHILDREN OF BODOM.

SUBURBAN TRIBE is:

Ville Tuomi (ex-KYYRIA, UNITED UNDERWORLD) - Vocals
Janne Joutsenniemi (ex-STONE) - Bass
Roope Sirén - Guitar
Euge Valovirta (GODSPLAGUE) - Guitar
Alec Hirst-Gee - Drums

SUBURBAN TRIBE's latest album, "Now And Ever After", entered the Finnish chart at position No. 4. The CD was released on April 21, 2010 via Cobra Records.

TESTAMENT Guitarist's ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO Covers METALLICA's 'Fade To Black' (Audio) - Mar. 29, 2011

ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO, the experimental band led by TESTAMENT/ex-SAVATAGE guitarist Alex Skolnick, recorded a cover version of the METALLICA classic "Fade To Black" for its fourth album, "Veritas" (Latin for"Truth"), which is scheduled to arrive in stores today (Tuesday, March 29). You can now stream the track at DecibelMagazine.com.

"The new album was going to be all original and no covers, but it seemed a shame not to at least try an arrangement of 'Fade To Black', which been on the back burner for a few years now," Skolnick tells Decibel. "As if we needed a further sign, we received thumbs up from two members of METALLICAKirk Hammett, who spoke highly of the trio in print, and Rob Trujillo, who jumped up on stage to jam with us during our soundcheck at Radio City Music Hall. The song felt like a great choice for its use of melody, both in the vocals and the guitar, as well as a mood that is more reflective than aggressive… very bold for METALLICA who was so associated with hyper speed, punk-like metal at the time.

"Coordinating with the original arrangement gave us an opportunity to experiment with some ideas that were unusual for us — a loop reinterpretation of the opening riff, the intro lead guitar licks quoted and doubled by jazz guitar and the upright bass, the main body of the song played to a pulsating, fast groove instead of a ballad and a drum solo in the middle of the tune instead of the end."

ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO will perform at Best Buy Union Square in New York City on Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. The group will play a 20-minute set followed by a 20-minute guitar clinic with Skolnick. After that the TRIO will sign copies of "Veritas".

Buy "Veritas" at Best Buy Union Square starting March 29 at 12:01 a.m. and get a wristband to meet the ALEX SKONICK TRIO. Not in New York City? You can stream the event live at this location.

A six-minute preview video for "Veritas" can be viewed below. The CD is AST's first release on innovative jazz label Palmetto Records. The 11-track album contains nine original compositions, a cover of METALLICA's "Fade To Black" and a bonus remix of the song "Bollywood Jam" by Jay Sustain and Nik Chinboukas. The record was produced by Alex Skolnick and recorded at Spin Recording Studios in Long Island City, New York.

"Veritas" track listing:

01. Panna
02. Bollywood Jam
03. Song of the Open Road
04. Veritas
05. Fade To Black
06. Alone In Brooklyn
07. 99/09
08. Path Of Least Resistance
09. Reflections
10. The River Lethe
11. Bollywood Jam - Club Remix Version

Alex Skolnick is a true guitar hero. At sixteen years old, he joined a group of twenty-somethings who'd formed a thrash metal band called TESTAMENT. Alex stayed with the band through five critically acclaimed albums and countless tours with, among others, SLAYER, MEGADETH, JUDAS PRIEST and WHITE ZOMBIE. After hearing and seeing one of Miles Davis' electric bands on TV, Alex relocated to New York City to play and study jazz.

ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO (AST) was formed while Alex was earning his BFA in jazz from New School University in Manhattan. AST has been lauded by critics, fans and musical heroes alike ranging from Downbeat to Jazziz to the Village Voice to Kirk Hammett of METALLICA.

"Veritas" will become a favorite of music fans that enjoy some of the pillars of jazz guitar — Scofield, Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery, Bill Frisell, Jim Hall and George Benson — but recast from an edgier and more energetic perspective. "Veritas" is poised to further push the boundary of contemporary jazz as fans of harder rock and metal are fast becoming a significant new audience in jazz. It is this fast-growing group of listeners that forms the core fan base of AST. They want truth in live performance, they want truth in great songs, they want "Veritas".

It was recorded at Shangri-La Studios in early 2010.

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION initially came to fruition when Shirley saw Hughes and Bonamassa join forces on stage in Los Angeles in November 2009 for an explosive performance at Guitar Center's King of the Blues event. Shirley then recruited Bonham and Sherinian for the project, which is named after the industrial area in the British Midlands where both Hughes and Bonham were born and raised.

Although ALTER BRIDGE vocalist Myles Kennedy sang just two tracks on Slash's self-titled solo debut, Slash recently confirmed that Myles will sing everything on the guitarist's next solo effort.

Speaking to Triple M during his appearance at this year's Soundwave festival, Slash said, "I'm touring around with a sort of mobile studio and we're working on material that I'm gonna do with Myles for the next record. And I'm looking at, probably... It'll be early next year."

In a recent interview with The Pulse Of Radio, Kennedy said about the fact that Slash would like him to handle the lead vocals on the guitarist's next CD, "It's very flattering. I think there's kind of a cool thing we got going. We really enjoy working with each other. I know they're auditioning singers now for VELVET REVOLVER, so I don't know if they find the right guy if that'll affect things timing-wise. I'm not really sure. But the plan right now is that yeah, we'll do a record together down the road."

Slash's debut disc came out last year and featured a different singer on each track, including Chris Cornell, Ozzy Osbourne, M. Shadows and others.
